June, July, and August offer warm weather and long days, making them the busiest months for Italian yacht charters. Sea temperatures stay in the mid-to-high 70s (F), and calm conditions make anchoring easy along the Amalfi Coast and Aeolian Islands.

Book at least six to nine months early if you want a berth in popular spots like Capri, Portofino, or Porto Cervo. Expect the highest weekly rates and limited availability during these months.

September and the Shoulder Months

September offers a great alternative to the peak season. The sea stays warm, crowds thin out, and finding a berth becomes easier.

May is quieter and cooler, which makes it a good time to compare yachts before summer rates begin. October is a smart choice for southern routes like Sicily and the Aeolians if you want flexible dates, though fewer yachts operate as the season ends.

Extra Costs: APA, VAT, and Gratuity

Charters operating in the Mediterranean follow a "plus-expenses" model, meaning guests pay for running costs separately:

• APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance): A fee paid to the captain before the trip to cover fuel, food, and dockage. It is typically 20 to 25 percent of the base rate for sailing yachts and 30 to 35 percent for motor yachts. At the end of the trip, the captain provides a full account and refunds any unused funds.

• VAT (Value Added Tax): Italy charges 22 percent VAT on charters starting in Italian waters. This rate can drop if your itinerary spends significant time in international waters.

• Gratuity: Tipping is optional but customary. Guests typically tip the crew 10 to 15 percent of the base rate at the end of the week.
